What does beauty mean to you?
When I first heard about this campaign through UBC Sororities, I was eager to learn more about it’s purpose and mission. After some thorough research, I decided that I want to take part on The Roster’s movement towards redefining the standards of beauty.
To me, beauty means many different things, but don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about physical beauty here because that’s just too shallow. Being beautiful is SO much more than that, and it took me 13 years of my life to realize that. Of course, we all have insecurities and things about ourselves that we want to change; for me, I’ve been on yo-yo diets and mindless eating habits that really made me re-evaluate my life choices every night before I go to bed. I’ve even thought about getting plastic surgery to get rid of a scar on my face that is barely noticeable for others but whenever I look into the mirror I just wish it was never there. I’ll be honest, it’s hard. It really is; especially when we are constantly exposed to media constructed ideas of beauty. Thankfully, I am learning to overcome that, and in truth, I am so much more happier and comfortable in my own skin than anything.
Beauty is a sense of humour.
Beauty is doing good for yourself and others.
Beauty is self love.
Beauty is self confidence.
Beauty is working hard for what you love.
Beauty is intelligence.
Beauty is every angle, shape, size, and colour.
Beauty is YOU.
You don’t need someone’s approval for you being you, me being me. One thing I’ve learned over the past years is that whatever you do, do it for yourself and not for others. Change however you like because that is what you want for yourself, not for anyone else. The most beautiful thing about you is simply you. Everyone is unique and beautiful in their own way and definition, and that’s what makes each and every one of us unique. This world does not need clones but variety, and The Roster is exactly the kind of movement we need in our society to encourage that. How boring would it be if everyone looked and dressed and acted the same way? Pretty boring if I were to say.
