I, like many of you, been bullied my entire life. From when I was little, in elementary school, I worried about what I looked like and was told I didn't look "right". High school was hard - I constantly felt like I had to change who I was to fit in. So many tears and dreaded school days later, I sat down with myself one night and decided I was stronger and better than what I gave myself credit for. I wasn't going to let other people break me down. I am beautiful and I am strong - something I think most of us are scared to say in fear of sounding conceited. Say it loud and say it proud! Learn to KNOW you are an amazing person and have strengths unique to you.
I know everyone has these same problems, but by the time I was in my last year of high school I had finally found a group of friends outside my high school and adopted an attitude I recommend to everyone - If you don't like me forme, that's okay, beacause I am happy with who I am. Coming to university and joining a sorority allowed me to become part of a community that has given me so many opportunities. UBC Sororities gave me opportunities to hold leadership positions like the ones I've always thrived in. These positions and the people on the council I am part of push me and help me grow. They see that I am an amazing person who is capable of so much.
I believe kindness and empathy are important, but I've learned that sometimes you have to put yourself and your best interests first. If someone isn't good for you, makes you feel bad about yourself, and doesn't make you feel like you're able to be yourself, then ask yourself why they are part of your life. I want to share this message with everyone - If someone does not see your beauty, your strength, and your sparkle, they aren't worth your effort. There are people who do see those things - those are the people who will raise you up every day. Seek these people and let yourself grow and flourish with them - that is a true friendship - one where you help each other become the best you can be. So smile darling, you ARE beautiful, you ARE strong, and your sparkle is mesmerising. Never let anyone make you feel otherwise.
